Electrostriction in elastic dielectrics undergoing large deformation
We develop a thermodynamic model of electrostriction for elastic dielectrics capable of large deformation. The model reproduces the classical equations of state for dielectrics at small deformation, but shows that some electrostrictive effects negligible at small deformation may become pronounced at large deformation. The model is then specialized to account for recent experiments with an elast...
متن کاملOn the Geometrically Nonlinear Analysis of Composite Axisymmetric Shells
Composite axisymmetric shells have numerous applications; many researchers have taken advantage of the general shell element or the semi-analytical formulation to analyze these structures. The present study is devoted to the nonlinear analysis of composite axisymmetric shells by using a 1D three nodded axisymmetric shell element. Both low and higher-order shear deformations are included in the ...
متن کاملLarge Deformation Inverse Consistent Elastic Image Registration
This paper presents a new image registration algorithm that accommodates locally large nonlinear deformations. The algorithm concurrently estimates the forward and reverse transformations between a pair of images while minimizing the inverse consistency error between the transformations. It assumes that the two images to be registered contain topologically similar objects and were collected usi...
متن کاملDeformation and Breakup of Drops in Axisymmetric Flows and Comparisons with the Taylor Analogy Breakup Model
The Taylor analogy breakup (TAB) model is used for the prediction of drop deformation and drop breakup in spray simulations conducted with CFD codes. This model assumes that a spherical droplet moving in a gas stream behaves like a forced, damped harmonic oscillator in which the forcing term is given by the aerodynamic drag, the damping is due to the liquid viscosity and the restoring force is ...
متن کاملContact between nonlinearly elastic bodies
We study the contact between nonlinearly elastic bodies by variational methods. After the formulation of the mechanical problem we provide existence results based on polyconvexity and on quasiconvexity. Then we derive the Euler-Lagrange equation as a necessary condition for minimizers. Here Clarke’s generalized gradients are the essential tool to treat the nonsmooth obstacle condition.
